SANBI is in charge of developing what will be South Africa's 11th National Botanical Garden (Thohoyandou Botanical Garden), marking the first one in Limpopo Province. This initiative aligns with SANBI's goal to create at least one National Botanical Garden in every province across the country. Spanning 89 hectares, the garden primarily features the Soutpansberg mountain bushveld and was previously overseen by Eric Netshuingani, a retired ethnobotanical expert and the founder of the Venda Herbarium. The future vision includes enhancing the plant collections that are showcased and preserved, with a particular emphasis on Limpopo's unique flora. SANBI is collaborating closely with the Department of Environmental Affairs to officially designate the site as a National Botanical Garden as soon as possible.
