Queens Park

Queens Park proudly honors its rich history. Once a grazing area for cattle and the venue for the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s shows in the 1880s, it has transformed into an animal reserve that serves both recreational and educational purposes, resembling a charming farmyard. Here, rabbits, guinea pigs, and various domestic fowl coexist happily, while more exotic creatures like wallabies, alpacas, and ostriches draw plenty of visitors.

At the Queens Park aviary, you can get a close-up view of New Zealand’s remarkable birdlife. This innovative facility opened its doors in 1998 and has since become a local favorite.

As you wander through the expansive stumpery near the impressive aviary, your imagination can soar, especially when encountering some of New Zealand"s rare native birds that are hard to find in captivity. The animal reserve is a joy for visitors of all ages, showcasing a delightful mix of animals and birds. The park also features numerous walking and cycling paths, a 3.4km fitness track with 20 exercise stations, and an 18-hole golf course. Throughout Queens Park, you"ll find a beautiful array of mature trees and shrubs, lovely sculptures, a large playground with a water play area for kids, and two fantastic cafés.
