Kwelera National Botanical Garden

Kwelera National Botanical Garden (NBG) is the newest addition to SANBI’s collection, being the 10th garden established. Unlike its historic inland counterparts, such as the Makana botanical garden in Grahamstown and the King William’s Town botanical garden, Kwelera is beautifully situated on the Wild Coast near East London. This marks SANBI"s first NBG in the Eastern Cape. Although Kwelera NBG is not yet open to visitors, the site has been officially designated, and environmental impact assessment consultants have been engaged to carry out EIAs for its construction elements. Landscape architects are currently working on designs for the 10-hectare landscaped area of the gardens. Stay tuned for updates as this thrilling project develops!
