King Edward Park

Established in 1902, King Edward Park was designed by surveyor and engineer Henry Climie. The park features two intersecting grassy avenues, making it a lovely spot for leisurely strolls. It was also envisioned as a source of inspiration for local gardeners, showcasing a variety of plants that thrive in the area. You can still see traces of this theme today with 15 different types of hedge plants, vibrant spring daffodil displays, and both heritage and contemporary rose gardens.

The park is home to several notable pieces of history, including ornate wrought iron gates, a marble statue honoring pioneering farmer Arthur Fantham, and a bronze statue of Wendy, which complements the Peter Pan statue in Kensington Gardens, London. A specially designed model boating lake hosts an annual regatta for little ships, while the former tea kiosk and band rotunda now serves as Hawera’s observatory.

Children love the 150-year-old cannon, which has become a beloved plaything, along with a pirate ship and fort. For younger visitors, there’s modern play equipment, and the park also offers picnic tables, seating, and an electric barbecue, making it a favored spot for family outings.
