Butler Point Whaling Museum

Butler Point features a hidden waterfront garden that pays tribute to retired whaler Capt. William Butler and his successor, Hubert Dacre. The current owners have been living here since 1972. Surrounding the historic house, built in the 1840s, is a charming traditional cottage garden that welcomes visitors. This lovely garden is nestled between the harbor and a lush area of native bush. The main plantings are predominantly sub-tropical, showcasing dombeya, tibouchina, Hibiscus mutabilis, agaves, and blue echiums. Additionally, there is an old orchard next to a stunning grove of towering pohutukawa trees (Metrosideros excelsa). Noteworthy features include a magnificent Magnolia grandiflora and a large fig tree whose roots and branches extend over the sea at high tide, along with an ancient olive tree planted by Butler himself in the 1840s. A short walk away, you can also find an early Pa site with informative signage.
