Perched just 119 meters above sea level, Soutomaior Castle dominates the Verdugo Valley and blends medieval fortress architecture with 19th-century neo-Gothic elegance. Located in Pontevedra, Galicia, this site combines history, gardens, and interactive museum experiences to enchant visitors of all ages.
Highlights:
The castle is set within 25 hectares of botanical gardens and woodlands, home to hundreds of camellias, ancient chestnuts, and rare tree species like sequoias, monkey puzzle trees, and Japanese cedars.
In 2012 it was recognised by the International Camellia Society as a Garden of Excellence.
Originally built in the 12th century for defense, Soutomaior has evolved over time through wars, restorations, and noble residences.
The current form includes two towers joined by a residential building and courtyard, surrounded by double walls.
Immersive museum tours with video mapping, 3D re-enactments, “magic boxes,” and exhibits that tell stories of castle life, the families who lived here, and Galicia’s past.
