The Jardín de Cactus, located in Guatiza, Lanzarote, Canary Islands is the final creation of artist César Manrique. Established in 1991, it transformed an abandoned volcanic ash quarry into a captivating botanical garden. The garden features approximately 4,500 cacti from 500 species worldwide, arranged in a terraced, amphitheater-like design. A restored 19th-century windmill, once used for milling gofio (toasted maize flour), stands at the highest point, offering panoramic views of the garden. Visitors can explore diverse cactus species, including those from North and South America and Madagascar, and enjoy the interplay of architecture and nature that defines Manrique’s vision. The site also houses a cafeteria offering traditional Lanzarote dishes, such as papas arrugadas (wrinkled potatoes) and cactus-based items like the cactus burger.
