Borová hora Arboretum

The Borová hora Arboretum (Arborétum Borová hora) is a world-class 50-hectare (500,000 m²) botanical reserve, scientific facility, and landscape masterpiece managed by the Technical University in Zvolen (TUZVO) in Zvolen, Slovakia. Established officially on March 30, 1965, this protected national landmark specializes uniquely in archiving the original native dendroflora of Slovakia across its broad geographic and genetic variations. Engineered for serious flower travelers, landscape designers, and dendrology students, the sprawling upland park balances vast outdoor woodland loops with specialized hothouses and the single largest rose collection in the Slovak Republic.

Highlights:

🌹 Slovakia’s Largest Rosarium: Wander through a premier historical rose garden showcasing over 800 distinct varieties and nearly 3,500 individual rose bushes. The genetic archive strictly prioritizes preserving traditional cultivars bred on the historic territories of the former Kingdom of Austria-Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and modern Slovakia.

🌲 13,500+ Specimen Native Forest: Explore a massive living library containing more than 13,500 individual trees and woody plants representing 485 species and 1,035 cultivars. The collection stands out in Europe for mapping over 1,500 unique geographic population origins.

🌺 The Late-May Rhododendron Flushes: Experience a stunning explosion of color across their specialized hillside tracks during the signature Days of Rhododendrons (Dni rododendronov) festival at the end of May, a rare weekend window when the university gates open fully to the general public.

🌵 The 1,000-Cacti Transatlantic Collection: Step inside specialized climate-controlled glasshouses (founded in 1972) sheltering over 1,000 individual desert plants across 450 species, highlighting rare Echinocereus and Mammillaria groupings imported from North America and Mexico.
