Antsokay Arboretum

Rising out of the sun-baked plains of southwest Madagascar, the Antsokay Arboretum is a pioneering 40-hectare research sanctuary dedicated to conservation. Founded in 1980 by Swiss botanist Hermann Petignat, this spectacular desert oasis serves as an open-air classroom exploring the survival secrets of the island’s critically endangered, highly endemic spiny forest ecosystem.

Highlights:

🌵 Endemic Spiny Forest Collection: Discover over 900 rare plant species—90% endemic to Madagascar—including massive baobabs and architectural Didiereaceae thorn trees.

🔬 Regional Conservation Herbarium: Step inside the scientific facility to view a massive repository of seeds, wood samples, and pressed desert flora monitored by global researchers.

🐒 Nocturnal Wildlife Spotting: Join a thrilling guided night walk to observe shy forest creatures like the tiny grey mouse lemur, chameleons, and rare geckos.
