Sežana Botanical Park

Sežana Botanical Garden (Botanični vrt Sežana), historically wrapping around the elegant Villa Mirasasso, is a spectacular 1.2-hectare historical landscape park and cultural monument located in Sežana, within the rugged Karst region of Slovenia. Established in 1848 by the wealthy Greek merchant family Scaramangà, this master-planned estate reflects an era of grand wealth and immense passion for global flora. Designed for flower travelers, garden historians, and landscape photographers, the park masterfully blends a rigid, Italian-style formal configuration with an extraordinary collection of non-native exotic trees and historic iron glasshouses, presenting a highly sophisticated and tranquil botanical retreat.

Highlights:

🏰 The 1848 Villa Mirasasso Legacy: Explore a monumental mid-19th-century estate shaped over decades by the Scaramangà family, who leveraged global maritime trade routes to import rare seeds and mature botanical specimens from all corners of the earth.

🌴 The Multi-Climate Palm House: Tour a historic, beautifully preserved 1890s iron and glass greenhouse complex modeled explicitly after classic Viennese hothouses, sheltering delicate tropical palms, seasonal exotic blooms, and rare ferns.

🌳 Nearly 200 Exotic Wood Species: Walk down wide, manicured gravel paths to inspect a living library of nearly 200 distinct species of exotic woody plants and trees, highlighted by towering Lebanon cedars, giant sequoias, and mature magnolias that contrast beautifully with the native Karst landscape.

🗿 Artistic Italianate Architecture: Capture high-end media across formal geometric display lawns decorated with classical stone statues, stone staircases, a historic stone well, and a dedicated exhibition space mapping the traditional stone-cutting heritage of the Karst area (Vrtovi Krasa).
