Auckland Council proudly showcases the Wintergarden at the Auckland Domain, a remarkable historical gem. Designed in the early 1900s by the renowned English duo Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jeckyll, it opened its doors in 1913.
Visitors can marvel at an array of rare and stunning plants, including the Amorphopallus titanum (corpse flower) and an impressive variety of chrysanthemums, all displayed in two beautifully designed Victorian-style glasshouses. These glasshouses overlook a spacious courtyard and a sunken pool. The courtyard features elegant marble statues, added in the 1920s and 30s by local entrepreneur William Elliot. One glasshouse is kept warm to showcase vibrant tropical plants, while the other presents temperate plants that change with the seasons.
Connecting the formal layout are substantial pergolas adorned with eye-catching climbing plants. Additionally, a diverse collection of New Zealand ferns thrives in a sunken scoria quarry at the back, rounding out the Wintergarden experience.
