Ōhinetahi is nestled in a charming bay that offers stunning views stretching along Lyttelton Harbor and up to the nearby hills.
The garden was originally established in 1865 by T.H. Potts, who is recognized as New Zealand"s first botanist. Potts introduced a diverse range of exotic trees and shrubs, many of which continue to thrive around the edges of the garden today. After his passing in 1888, the garden fell into neglect, eventually becoming little more than a lawn surrounding the house.
