OMAIO, a Māori term that translates to "place of peace, quiet, and tranquility," is my 18-acre (7.28 hectares) coastal property located on the Takatu Peninsula, just an hour"s drive north of Auckland and a quick 10-minute trip from Matakana. From the log cabin, you can enjoy views of the islands, including Kawau, Goat, Rabbit, and The Bee Hive in Kawau Bay. The cabin is nestled within a native New Zealand bush setting, featuring a magnificent Puriri tree that is estimated to be between 1,200 and 1,500 years old. While the majority of the planting consists of native species, there is also a thoughtful mix of other plants that complement the environment. The existing landscape influenced the design and planting style, with the garden surrounding the cabin designed in gentle, flowing curves that echo the waves and coastal contours nearby.
