Heishindo-Former Kazama Family Residence

Heishindo: Former Home of the Kazama Family
Constructed in 1896, Heishindo served as both a residence and the headquarters for the Kazama family"s silk business, led by the seventh-generation member, Kazama Koemon. He played a significant role in supporting Tsuruoka’s silk industry and held the position of company president. The Kazama family thrived as suppliers to the Shonai Clan, contributing to the service of Tsuruoka Castle. Notable features of the house include its spacious structure and the 40,000 stones adorning the roof, which showcase the modernist Japanese architectural style of Shonai during the Meiji period (1868-1912).
