Former Hongo Family Residence

Former Hongo Family Residence. The Honma family stood as the richest merchant family in Japan from the 17th century until the mid-20th century. Their vast fortune surpassed that of feudal lords, making them the envy of many across the nation. The Honma Residence initially functioned as a regional base for visiting shogunate officials. Its architecture beautifully blends elements from traditional samurai homes and merchant buildings.

An old pine tree that shades the entrance symbolizes the Honma family"s ethos of humility and modesty. This principle, rooted in simplicity and resilience, is evident in their commitment to the local community. They supported the planting of trees to shield farmers" fields and built homes and gardens to provide shelter and work for those struggling during difficult harvests.
