Kyu-Nanbu-shi Villa Garden

Kyu-Nanbu-shi Villa Garden. A nationally recognized monument associated with scenic locations, the "Former Nanbu Family Villa Garden" features a picturesque stroll-style layout with a pond, situated within the villa of the Nanbu family, who were the lords of Morioka Castle and the Nanbu clan, following the Meiji Restoration. Although it was established after the feudal domains were dissolved and prefectures were created, it retains the charm of a feudal lord"s garden. Originally constructed in the early Edo period as the site for the Nanbu clan"s "imperial medicinal garden," it later became the residence of the domain lord. The garden experienced a phase when a domain school was established and another when it fell into neglect. The current "former Nanbu family villa main house," built in the late Meiji period, is recognized as a nationally registered tangible cultural property and now serves as the "Morioka City Central Community Center." The Onari Room, believed to have hosted Emperor Meiji, was originally part of the city"s "Shimatsuen" and has since been relocated and reconstructed as "Seifu-kaku." Additionally, the Nakamura Family Residence, which is a nationally designated important cultural property, is located next to the garden.
