José do Canto Botanical Garden is spanning 5.8 acres, Jardim Botânico José do Canto is a haven for nature enthusiasts. While it may not showcase every plant variety from its founding era, there’s still plenty to see and appreciate. The trees you can admire today were imported from all five continents centuries ago, allowing you to take a remarkable stroll around the globe without ever leaving Ponta Delgada.
José do Canto (1820-1898) was an educated and affluent individual with a deep passion for nature. He had a strong knowledge of botany and built relationships with botanical gardens and nurseries globally, where he engaged in buying, selling, and exchanging various plants.
By the mid-19th Century, he transformed his garden in Santana, Ponta Delgada, into a remarkable area for acclimatizing thousands of plant species, many of which were later incorporated into his beautifully designed woodlands at Furnas and Lagoa do Congro.
