Stepping into the Marmottan isn’t just about paintings—it’s walking into Monet’s garden with your eyes. The museum houses the world’s largest collection of Monet’s works, including dozens of masterpieces framed by his love of flowers, gardens and water.
Highlights:
Largest Collection of Monet Works
The museum holds the world’s biggest collection of paintings by Claude Monet. This includes Impression, Sunrise (1872)—from which the Impressionist movement got its name—as well as major works like his Water Lilies, The Japanese Bridge, and views of Monet’s garden at Giverny.
Berthe Morisot Collection
It houses the largest public collection of works by Berthe Morisot, a founding figure in Impressionism. You’ll see oil paintings, pastels, and watercolors by her that beautifully capture delicate light, domestic scenes, and garden life.
Illuminated Manuscripts & Medieval/Renaissance Art
Apart from Impressionist works, there’s a superb collection of illuminated manuscripts and artwork from the Middle Ages and Renaissance—something many visitors don’t expect.
Decorative Arts & Empire-era Collections
The museum retains much of its original mansion decor. There are furniture pieces, bronze and porcelain objects, Empire-style decorative art from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, including furnishings and pieces once owned by Napoleon’s family.
Water Lilies Room / Lower-Level Gallery
There’s a specially designed gallery space (added later) that shows Monet’s large canvases of water lilies. The layout allows for viewing paintings both up close and from a distance, giving a sense of immersion.
Atmosphere & Setting
Less crowded than many big Paris museums, it offers a quieter, more intimate setting. The mansion’s original architecture contributes to a more relaxed stroll through art.
